This is not a make-believe love here; it’s the real thing. Anything that has happened to Vera is fallout of this love. It’s her only agenda. So she is going to present you clothes in an extremely loving manner: beautiful clothes in the most beautiful way possible.”

Vera Wang’s Story

Vera Wang, born on June 27 1949, is an American fashion designer based in New York and especially known for her wedding dresses collection.

Her parents were born in Shanghai, China, and came to the United States in the mid-1940s. Vera Wang was born and raised in New York and after graduating from The Chapin School in 1967, she attended the Sorbonne, University of Paris and earned a degree in art history from Sarah Lawrence College.

While in high school, Wang trained as a figure skater with pairs partner James Stuart, and won the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She was featured in Sports Illustrated in the January 8, 1968 issue. When she failed to make the US Olympics team, she entered the fashion industry.

Vera Wang’s love for fashion was discovered during her studying years in Paris. Returning to the US after graduation, she became American Vogue’s youngest ever fashion editor at the age of 23. She left Vogue in 1985 after being turned down for the editor-in-chief position and joined Ralph Lauren as a Design Director for two years.

Qing Shupei - famous Chinese supermodel, wearing Vera Wang’s design in the Fashion Show For Fall 2010

In 1989, 39-year-old Vera Wang was a high-powered, high-fashion design director. She was also engaged to marry businessman Arthur Becker, and she wanted the perfect dress for her wedding day. But even though she visited stores all over New York City, she found only traditional, fussy gowns, designed for a younger bride.

“I’m very modern and sophisticated,” Wang said, “I didn’t want to look like the girl on top of the wedding cake.” Frustrated at the lack of options, Wang decided that she would simply have to create her own dress. It was the first dress Vera Wang designed. Soon after her wedding, Wang made an important decision: she knew there was a need for more sophisticated, elegant wedding gowns. In 1990, she opened her own design salon in the Carlyle Hotel in New York that features her trademark bridal gowns.

Within months, word of Wang’s designs spread quickly among well-to-do New Englanders, upper-class socialites, and celebrities. Vera Wang eventually launched a signature collection of streamlined and sophisticated bridal wear and soon became the foremost designer of wedding gowns in the world. In 2005, she was awarded Womenswear Designer of the Year by the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America).

Vera Wang’s Recognition

Evening Gowns popular with Celebrities

Wang’ story doesn’t stop at bridal dresses. She has also designed formal gowns for many top celebrities too. Wang has made gowns for Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Avril Lavigne, Victoria Beckham, Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Garner, Sharon Stone, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Uma Thurman, Holly Hunter and many more top celebrities. Many famous celebrities dress in her beautifully designed evening gowns for award ceremonies, movie premieres, and other important events.

Vera Wang’s designs are very simple but not boring, she is known for simply constructed, slinky gowns that drape smoothly over a woman’s body as the pictures below show.

Fashion in Figure Skating

Wang was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2009, and was honoured for her contribution to the sport as a costume designer. She has designed costumes for figure skaters, including Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek. Silver medalist Nancy Kerrigan wore a unique design of Vera’s for the 1994 Olympics. She designed the two-piece uniforms currently worn by the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders.

Appearance on popular media

In the ‘Sex and the City’ TV series, Charlotte York found Wang’s wedding dress to be the perfect wedding dress, and wore it for her wedding to Trey MacDougal. In ‘Sex and the City’ movie, Vera Wang was featured amongst the bridal gowns Carrie Bradshaw wore in her Vogue photo shoot.

Beyond Wedding Gowns and Dresses

By balancing modern designs with traditional elegance, Vera Wang has acquired a large following, particularly in Hollywood. Eventually, Wang ventured beyond fashion designs in gowns and dresses, expanding her brand name through her fragrance, jewelry, eyewear, shoes and house ware collections.

On October 23, 2001, her book Vera Wang on Weddings was released.

Vera Wang on Weddings Book

The world’s most successful bridal gown designer shares her vision for this most important event of a person’s life – the wedding. Rather than a soup-to-nuts approach with endless lists of what to do, Vera Wang details each aspect of the wedding with her thoughts and ideas, culled from years of experience in the wedding business.

In 2002, Vera Wang launched her first signature fragrance which was simply called Vera Wang. An exotic and feminine scent featuring notes of mandarin, lotus and iris, it was designed with brides in mind. During that year she also began to enter the home fashion industry, launching The Vera Wang China and Crystal Collection.

Vera Wang Princess Fragrance

She continued to launch several perfumes, for example – Vera Wang for men (2004), Princess (2006) and Truly Pink (2007).

2007 also saw the release of her diffusion line called Simply Vera Wang, sold exclusively by Kohl’s (an American departmental store chain)

The Vera Wang brand covers from wedding fashion basics like jewelry, eye wear and shoes to post-wedding lifestyle choices like chinaware, stationary and even mattresses.

Vera Wang’s most outlandish project to date is coupling with Eight Wonder (Las Vegas based casino developer) to design hotel suites under the Vera Wang name.

Vera Wang’s Latest Collection-Fall 2010 Fashion Show

Tailoring was a focus of this fashion show. However Vera Wang put her luxurious, ultra-femme stamp on it; adding Mongolian lamb trim to the hem of a coat and cutting the sleeves off at the elbows so it can be worn with opera gloves;affixing sequins to the mesh pockets of a charcoal felt double-lapel jacket.

A pair of her easy paper-bag-waist tuxedo pants, worn with a draped one-shoulder top in white linen voile or an ivory silk faille tucked bustier, would make fabulous alternatives to the little black cocktail dress. Among the best was a simple twisted and draped jersey frock that fell to just above the knee.

“Less is more” is not a concept that feels entirely natural for Wang. Still, she nailed it with a scalloped black organza gown that looked practically weightless as it glided down the runway.

Spring 2011 Wedding Gown Collection

Each piece embodies the delicate, airy feeling that spring brings to each of us. Soft hues, luxurious fabrics, and clouds of silk and tulle dominate this Spring 2011 Collection.

As always, Vera’s collection include both classic, simple white or ivory wedding dresses, as well as more daring gowns in unexpected shades. Every detail (including hints of lace and floral appliqué) is beautifully done, while being restrained and demure.

And reduce the visitors pick up time and transportation costs.

This pretty lady in the picture above is not a model or an actress. She is just a regular person like you and me. But what makes her special? She is merely wearing a striped tube top and shorts with a pair of sunglasses.

However, this is the current trend in China – Street Style (there are also other names such as Street Wear or Street Fashion) which trigger off StreetSnap.

Street Snap is a term used to describe fashion that is considered to have emerged not from studios or runways but from everyday regular people on the streets, especially youths and fashionistas.

We may be familiar with fashion shows held in Paris or Milan, but how many youngsters have the earning power to own and afford designer labels? Hence, the Street Fashion emerged as creative fashionistas thought of many innovative ways to DIY their clothes and eventually develop their own fashion sense. Individualism is what many people are after nowadays. After all, you don’t want to see someone across the street wearing exactly the same shirt as you, do you? It’s even possible to recycle clothes you hardly wear and DIY into Street Fashion.

Street Fashion possibly originated from Europe, where all the subcultures developed. Europe, as known to the world is a fashion trend-setter. Japan may possibly be the first Asian country to be influenced from the Europeans. Hence, StreetSnap in European countries as well as in USA & in Japan are common but it was until in recent years that we were seeing more Street Fashion in China.

Street Fashion is an attitude that represents oneself. It doesn’t matter if one is fat, thin as long as you’re comfortable in your own style. Then that is the right attitude to bring out what you’re wearing even if it’s just a simple T-shirt and jeans.

Many local Chinese female magazines even teach readers how to dress streetstyle.

“Vivienne Tam’s world is made up of Buddhas, mythical dragons, fierce tigers, chubby Chinese babies, sacred lotus flowers and Chairman Mao’s stern moon face decorate a vividly coloured landscape. Such Asian motifs are in her blood, and printing them on clingy stretch nylon netting has made Tam one of the decade’s most original and popular American fashion designers.” —Mimi Avins, Reporter The Los Angeles Times

Vivienne Tam was born on 28 November 1957 in Guangzhou, China and moved to Hong Kong at the age of three. She graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a degree in Fashion Design. In 1981, she went to New York and eventually established her own fashion company East Wind Code as well as her fashion label named after her, Vivienne Tam in 1990.

Tam’s clothing was a hit with fashion-forward women, who liked its Asian influence. By combining culture, classic style, and an offbeat flair to her fashion design, Vivienne Tam has become one of the 21st century’s most successful contemporary designers. The key to her achievement is her ability to design with an eye for East meets West, an inspiration that comes from her current home, New York City, and her childhood home, Hong Kong.

By bringing these cultural inspirations together in her designs, she is able to design clothing of traditional elements with a modern edge. Her collections are perceived with the idea that each person’s personality will bring out different aspects from within each design.

Tam’s collections were lively and awash in color, often mixing religious symbolism with Asian art, silver, red, and beautiful embroidery becoming her trademarks.

Designers often struggle initially to cultivate a distinct image, Tam’s line was quickly known for its East-meets-West polish. Her clean lines, Asian prints, rich colour sense, and facility with beading garnered critical success. It also allowed her to open boutiques from L.A. to Tokyo while placing her pieces in top stores and museum archives.

Tam spent a month in Beijing and Shanghai to interview people for her first book, China Chic, which was published in 2000. Tam’s aim, was to show Chinese culture in a way that is not filtered through Western biases. “I wanted people to know not just cheongsam and chop suey and chopsticks, I wanted to go deeper.”

The square shape and red plastic binding of China Chic mimicked Mao’s famous “Little Red Book” of quotations, but Tam said that the overall design was simply following certain precepts of her culture. “Chinese cosmology is square, it’s very grounded. Chinese characters are in a square form and so is the architecture. The [Forbidden] Palace is all square forms with symmetric placement of furniture. Everything comes in pairs and a square is totally balanced.”

In 2007, Tam launched both the contemporary and higher-up markets—Vivienne Tam Red and Vivienne Tam Jade, respectively.

In 2008, Hewlett-Packard and Tam have been working together to create the HP Vivienne Tam Special Edition notebook. And the first generation of HP Vivienne Tam Special Edition is launched.

The notebook is gleaming red and bursting with peony flowers, a signature staple of Tam’s collection, on the lid. The peony design is then meticulously carried inside the notebook, under the keypad. The laptop also features a extra special enter key that bears the Chinese symbol for double happiness.

The notebook also features a complimentary embroidered storage sleeve that helps keep the exterior protected while being carried as a clutch.

The “digital clutch” represents the first time a computer company has partnered with a fashion designer to create a notebook PC as well as have it debut at a fashion show. In addition to the design of the notebook, Tam worked with HP to design its accessories and packaging.

Tam’s unique talent for bringing Asian and American culture together in fashion attracts many to her East Wind Code shops in New York, Los Angeles, Japan, and Hong Kong. Clients who admire her elegant, unconventional style include movie stars and musicians.

2010 Vivienne Tam’s Spring Show

Most designers would prefer not to have their collections reduced to a single word, but Vivienne Tam, who took a sole Chinese character as her leitmotif last season, was all about butterflies for spring.

Butterflies, in prints (both abstract and figurative) and appliqués, were to be seen on most everything in the show.

In the Eastern culture, peony means prosperous, a symbol of wealth and happiness, while the layers of coating is like a flower to do with personal style to express themselves, and science and technology into the colourful life of the smart modern woman.

Vivienne Tam with her latest 2nd generation HP netbook together with Senior VP Worldwide Marketing, HP Satjiv S. Chahil

HP and Vivienne Tam latest cooperation of product is the theme of “Butterfly Love (Butterfly Lovers)”, Vivienne Tam explained that this series is dominated by the traditional Chinese love story, “The Butterfly Lovers” was inspired by the beautiful butterfly accompanied by Champagne Gold Background

The new look in digital clutch chic marries two cultures – fashion and technology – to reflect a transformative spirit and sophisticated lifestyle. It fuses high fashion, small form factor and innovative function to take the personal computer from a necessity to a lifestyle statement for modern-day women on the go.

Although it’s still cold outside, but it’s definitely time to start thinking about your spring wardrobe. Spring is one of the best, and most exciting time of the year to go shopping. There are brand new spring designs in every store, and everyone is excited to put away their boring, old winter clothing. Everyone wants something new for the spring and summer seasons. Then, what are the must-have items?

1. Hot Pants

Hot Pants are sometimes referred to as shorts and this sexy hot pants has become a fashionable and stylish choice. Designer labels also had their hot pants collection, you can see many youngsters wearing hot pants on the streets. Hot pants are a fashion expression conveyed by the young & dynamic group. New styles, new colors, and new fabrics have greatly enhanced the popularity of women wearing hot pants.

If you feel that you’re inadequate in height, It is recommended to choose shorts with vertical stripes .This make people look a little taller. As far as possible, do not choose a short longer than knee, it makes the legs appear shorter. Just a T-shirt supporting horizontal and vertical stripes shorts and also with colourful socks will maximise the leg ratio.

If you want to hide your waist, these comfortable and loose pants can easily change your appearance. Loose coveralls shorts is a rare style but it can hide the belly, very innovative and stylish at the same time.

2. Skinny jeans

Skinny Jeans are also known as pencil pants. This type is characterized by pants cut on low waist. Dating back to the 1950s, skinny pants were a popular choice among celebrities such as Marlon Brand and Marilyn Monroe.

Now, this look is making a comeback, creating a big splash within the fashion industry. Skinny pants provide
an alternative to flared ones, which are often difficult to match with shoes. Skinny pants, on the other hand,
can be worn with several different types of shoes, allowing women to create a variety of chic looks that suit
almost any occasion.

Petite women make a big impact in pencil pants! The slender cut of this trendy style make the legs appear longer – an effect which can be emphasized with high heels or plateau pumps. For the most flattering effect, select fabrics with lengthwise stripes.

Styling tip: Trendsetters wear pencil pants with an extra-long top. Best of all, this look easily camouflages many figure problems

3. Peek-A-Boo

This is a kind of rugged jeans style that has existed since the 1990s. A different kind of “dirty” dress vogue, with jeans that has no real holes as the wearer usually would wear over & over again until it become tattered & torn. This very well may have accidentally becomes a kind of popular trend. A hint of skin is much sexier than a bared shoulder.

The arrangements of the holes are usually very visually impressive. It’s better to wear something underneath the holed-clothes to give a layered mash-up. With peek-a-boo like that, the effect is extremely sexy and people will be attracted to a cool personality you possess with your choice of exaggerate combination.

If you want to look simple, a black and/or white T-shirt with graphics or letters and the rugged-holed jeans would be good enough.

4. Knee high/over-the-knee socks

When it comes to women’s fashion accessories, knee high socks are some of the most challenging to incorporate into an outfit. Most accessories, like scarves and hats and jewelry, only enhance a look. You can easily remove them if they are inappropriate or miss the mark.

Styling tip:
Avoid knee high socks and thigh high socks with body suits, but don’t be afraid to experiment with tap pants, hot pants, and short shorts.

Don’t

Tug at socks and pull them up in public. No one looks comfortable in clothes they are constantly adjusting.

Wear white stockings with winter clothes. If it doesn’t work for shoes, it doesn’t work for socks.

Create a costume by pairing them with a pleated skirt, oxford shoes and a white blouse. Leave the uniform to the high school girls.

Wear short skirts and knee socks to the office. Save this look for the weekend.

Wear these socks with flat shoes. The result is too masculine.

Wear knee socks, or any socks for that matter, with strappy sandals.

Pile on too many trends at once. It’s easy to go from style maven to fashion victim if you wear too many faddish items together.

Wear knee highs with shorts. Save that look for the men in Bermuda.

Sport tube socks off the field or outside of the gym.

Wear knee socks with kilts unless you are playing a bagpipe.

5. Oversize Accessories

If you don’t get anything else this spring, do yourself a favour and invest in a big, bold necklace. These statement pieces update any outfit for a streamline affect. Whether you choose giant hoops adorned with jewels or a long multi strand necklace doubled up with a chunky beaded necklace , the bigger the better! Bring in the big, the bold and the glittery. The look is absolutely stunning & gorgeous.

Bangles are layered and the metallic cuffs are becoming larger and more detailed. It seems that saying of “less is more” is no longer a quote for the Spring Fashion.

See how the accessory can make a simple dress so beautiful? Also some fashion show showcasing the big jewellery accessories.

6. Scarf

Lightweight scarves are without a doubt becoming the IT accessory of the season. Wait, Scarves for spring? Yes! A lightweight scarf is not just a transitional item; it’s also the destination point.

A scarf, wrap, or shawl is a great alternative to a cardigan. It`s portable, and there`s just so much you can do with it: drape it over a thin shirt when the weather is in that in between phase between not quite cold and not quite warm, loop it through your handbag for some added drama, tie it around your head for a funkier look.

Little black suit accompanied by red and black lattice square scarf to break the usual dull black. See what a scarf can do to a simple black suit jacket on top a white top!

Random shape with tassels, a leisurely attitude without losing femininity at the same time.

The scarf can also be used as shawls, fashion dual-use. Do take note that the colour should match with the colour of the coat you’re wearing. Hopefully you don’t end up with colours that clash with each other.

Some helpful vocabulary for your use if you’d ever purchase something featured above in China.

1. 热裤 rè kù hot pants

2. 瘦腿裤 shòu tuǐ kù skinny pants

3. 铅笔裤 qiān bǐ kù pencil pants

4. 乞丐装 qǐ gài zhuāng Peek-A-Boo

5. 长筒袜 cháng tǒng wà knee high/over the knee socks

6. 饰品 shì pǐng jewelry

Celebrities have their own taste of fashion of designer clothes. Hence, it’s very possible for a handful of celebrities that may own the same piece of clothing for public appearance. It may be absolutely normal to be seen wearing the same top or dress for once or twice.

Two Chinese female celebrities have been seen wearing and/or carrying the exact same items up to 8 times lately. Is that a coincidence or they happen to have the same image/fashion consultant?

Featuring Shu Qi & Fan Bingbing.

Both of them look beautiful here. With hair up to her waist, Fan resembles Goddess Venus here. Although Shuqi was sporting a shorter bob hair, but there is always an air of elegance around her.

Despite wearing the same clothing, both of them are able to carry off differently and able to look incredibly stunning, with different hair-do.

When it comes to bags, it’s a matter of whether it suits you or not. Both ladies share the same liking for this limited edition of Hello Kitty bag. Certainly, they both look very trendy with this famous pink icon bag.

Another ‘goddess’-looking piece of dress that made both ladies look amazing. It seemed as though the neckline is adjustable and Fan may just look a tiny bit sexier than Shu with a more plunging neckline.

Perhaps it’s the pose & expression, perhaps it’s how the green strap fall off the shoulder, Fan definitely looks sexier than Shu who looked pretty rigid with the green strap diagonally across the chest.

Any girl would glow in their pink dresses including Fan & Shu, looking very radiant in their outfit. Although both of them have got slim & slender figure, Shu filled out the dress with her slightly more well-endowed figure as compared to Fan, whose dress seem to hang loosely.

This is an orange baby-doll type dress where it is supposed to make the wearer look younger and Shu look youthful and cheery here. Fan’s hair doesn’t seem to go with this outfit and made her look slightly older than intended.

Both ladies get to show off their nice figure in this elegant white gown. However, Fan’s hair is pretty outrageous for the whole look, making her at least 10 years older. She’d look much better if she had let her hair down. Shu could consider some curls to go with this dress, it looks a little unkept & messy in this picture though.

Chinese actress, Fan Bingbing usually wears a lot of girlie colours especially pinks, but on this occasion she wore a dark olive Givenchy Fall 2009 layered floor length Georgette gown. The one-sleeve gown had a padded shoulder, a draping panel on front, and half a peplum.

The speed of development in China has taken the world’s breath away. And here’s why.

The fashion industry in China is changing rapidly as Chinese consumers want to make purchases that reflect their newfound success and social status. With a rising number of millionaires and a growing middle class, China is expected to become the second biggest consumer of luxury goods by 2015.

OmniaLuo Inc, a domestic China-based company that designs, markets and distributes the luxury women’s apparel brand “OMNIALUO,” As an award-winning domestic brand designer, Cindy Luo, OmniaLuo Chairwoman and CEO commented on the new breed of luxury consumers in China, “We see many luxury brands including Dior and Louis Vuitton entering the Chinese marketplace to expand market share, selling to Chinese consumers. Also, several foreign fashion brands have moved their production to China. So China is becoming an integral part of the high end fashion industry in all aspects.”

Coach Inc, internationally desired for its luxury handbags and accessories, has ambitious plans for its line in China. According to Coach, “We expect Greater China, which includes Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China, to grow rapidly, achieving 10% of the global market by 2009. Therefore, we believe Greater China has the potential to become a third leg for Coach. Although we’re still in the very early stages of our development in Greater China, we have made great progress and estimate our market share today at about 4%. At year end there were a total of 49 Coach locations in the region, including 15 in mainland China, 13 in Hong Kong, 1 recently opened in Macau, and 20 in Taiwan.”

Currently, the world’s biggest fashion names are opening up outlets not only in major metropolises such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, but also wealthy secondary cities such as Hangzhou and Suzhou, to lure a new generation of brand conscious consumers from the Chinese mainland.

Fashion magazine also plays a huge part in the influx of fashion demand. If there were no fashion magazines, fashion would not be a public phenomenon. The fashion magazine industry in China, though with a much shorter history than the century of American publications, has been going all out to catch up. Even fashion magazines in China follow the pace of global fashion brands, what more the consumers?

With globalization, Chinese brands like Shanghai Tang and Vivienne Tam do have a global audience, attracting the attention of numerous collections not only in Asia but also department stores in England, Italy, Germany.

In weeks to come, stay tune to the latest and most updated fashion news about the current trends that is happening in different parts of China. We will take a closer look at how the locals get influenced from celebrities as well as the creative youths in China shouting out for attention with their fashion sense.

There is also going to be coverage on some hot spot boutiques to get that latest piece of apparel to stand out in the crowd. So do come back and check out this page weekly.
